20th July – 18th August 2012International Music Festival Český Krumlov21th Year20 July – 18 August 2012The International Music Festival Český Krumlov is entering the third decade of its existence with a program anchored in its dramaturgical tradition. It is going to follow symbolically the spirit of the 20th year´s celebrations by introducing three foremost opera stars. The festival will be opened by a Gala Concert of an internationally acclaimed Russian baritone Dmitrij Hvorostovsky on 20 July. From the beginnig of his career, Hvorostovsky has been appreciated for his cultivated voice, musicality and natural legato. He has performed at the world’s major opera houses including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera. Hvorostovsky is a regular guest at many renowned international music festivals and he is also a celebrated recitalist who has appeared in the most prestigious concert halls ranging from that situated in the Far East to that situated in South America.
At the very end, the festival will bring a horse of another color – a performance of as many as four Canadian tenors. It is a specific vocal formation that is an exciting combination of classical and pop music, the unusualness of which attracts audiences regardless the age all around the world. The Canadian tenors are four talented and charismatic singers with strong voices and mastering different singing styles, who have also had solo careers of international dimensions. Millions of listeners all around the world have been charmed by their beautiful voices, great sense of humor, and easy-to-remember melodies. This quartet has earned positive reviews and standing ovations from Tel Aviv to New York and cooperated with many other stars including Andrea Bocelli, David Foster, Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Celine Dion, and Paul McCartney. This “vocal sensation” has gotten platinum records all around the world and won a number of international awards. Their repertoire includes English, French, as well as Spanish and Italian melodies.
The Argentinian tenor José Cura is next renowned opera singer who will appear at this year´s IMF Český Krumlov. Returning to sing at the festival for the third time, he will perform the role of Canio in Leoncavallo´s opera Pagliacci within a rerun of the last year´s successfull festival project in cooperation with the South Bohemian Theatre. The opera will be performed at Český Krumlov´s Revolving Auditorium from 24 to 26 August.
Nevertheless, IMF Český Krumlov is not only an opera festival. Classical music concerts which take place in the spaces of the State Castle Český Krumlov are the linchpin of festival´s dramaturgy. The renowned Russian pianist Konstantin Ščerbakov is a significant personage of instrumental music world who will perform Mendelssohn´s and Tchajkovsky´s piano concertos in the Castle Riding Hall on Friday, 27 July.
All the above mentioned artists except for those performing at the final Gala Concert will be accompanied by the residence festival orchestra, The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Festival´s classical linchpin is also formed by a series of chamber music concerts taking place in the Masquerade Hall. Among the artists presented within this series are for example violoncellist Jiří Bárta, violinist Bohuslav Matoušek, Musica Florea or Kaprálová Quartet.
Refreshment of different genres will be brought by a night with legendary Boban i Markovic Orkestar, a crossover night with Otto Sauter and “Ten of the Best” trumpet players in the world as well as a performance of the phenomenal prank Polish ensemble MozARTgroup.
