Eleven years in the running, The International Mahler Music Festival in Jihlava is now entering its second decade of existence. This year the organizers were loosely inspired by the Russian victory over Napoleon, 200 years ago, in 1812.  At the opening concert on May 16th in the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church (Kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže), we present Symphony No.5 by Gustav Mahler and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture under the baton of Marek Štilec , the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic from Zlín, and musicians from the Jihlava School of Music. We will invoke motifs of Love and War with a program of Octopus Pragenis by Christoph Demantius’ war music of the 16th century, and Moses Oratorio composed by Sylvie Bodorova and performed by the Moravian Philharmonic from Olomouc, the Prague Philharmonic Choir and the soloists Ivan Kusnjer, Kateřina Šmídová Kalvachová, Josef Zedník ,  Vladimír Čech and Jan Šťastný under the baton of Petr Vronský. Tradition and became a meeting of young brass bands in the Kaliště near Humpolec –the composer’s native village - will be the 26th of May. Kaliste will become the starting place of many special events, including a cycling trip from Kaliste to Jihlava, which organizes the festival in cooperation with the Czech Tourist Club Jihlava 17th of June. The festival will conclude at the Echoes Festival in Klosterneuburg, Austria on the 18th October, where you will hear the songs of Alma Mahler performed by Barbara Polášková and Miroslav Sekera. That part of the festival will also feature the premiere of an unknown composition by Zdenek Fibich, Variations in B-flat Major for Piano.
